The music on this 80 minute cd contains a cross section of big band compositions by Fred Stride. While coming firmly out of the big band tradition these are forward looking jazz pieces featuring extensive solo and ensemble work. The compositions range from a shuffle based on the Canadian parliamentary system, a subtle latin piece in 7/4, an up tempo piece based on life preservers, a dark blues, a light samba featuring clarinets and a concerto based on images of machinery. The powerhouse big band on this disc features many of Vancouver's finest jazz performers including soloists Brad Turner (trumpet), Campbell Ryga (soprano and alto saxophone), Tom Colclough (clarinet), Jon Bentley (tenor saxophone), Alvin Cornista (tenor saxophone) Andre Lachance (bass), Ross Taggart (piano), Dennis Esson (trombone) and many others.
